Here in Raleigh, we have a good problem: With so many great spots to choose from, how do you decide where to go for something to eat or drink? We think the best way to ask someone is to get a recommendation from a person who knows their stuff.

For our 2026 Guide to Where to Eat and Drink in Raleigh, we tapped 10 local foodies and hospitality folks to share their favorite spots based on years of experience and excellent palates. Their selections include a broad range of tastes — from fine-dining experiences to quick-serve comfort food — that consistently deliver.

One of them was Brigid Washington, a Trinidadian food writer and cookbook author whose work has appeared in Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, Garden & Gun, Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times. She serves as the vice chair of the journalism committee for the James Beard Foundation and is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America/ Washington is the author of Coconuts. Ginger. Shrimp. Rum and Caribbean Flavors for Every Season. Her next book, Salt, Sweat & Steam: The Fiery Education of an Accidental Chef, will be out in April.

Stanbury

Where do you go for a special-occasion meal?

It’s a tossup between Stanbury and Herons, I know that’s where I’ll find that intersection between consistency and creativity. There was a seafood hotpot at Herons last season that I’m still thinking about.

What’s your go-to restaurant?

Right now my favorite is Mr. Henry. I always order a French 75 to test out a new bar to see how confident they are with a classic. Not only did they nail it, but they also added something unexpected. I’m not sure what they placed in it but it has that je ne sais quoi quality.

What’s your favorite spot that doesn’t get enough cred?

Ajisai, I go there at least several times a month for a quick lunch. I get the bento box special and they always bring it out quickly, and it’s consistently good.

Where do you go to eat lunch?

For lunch, it depends how much time I have. I really like Coquette. I also like going to the Boxyard RTP because it’s near my husband’s work. We kind of wander through and see what appeals that day.

Where do you get a meal on the go?

We really like Five Star, and also Longleaf Swine BBQ

Mr. Henry

Where do you like to get a beverage?

That’s still Mr. Henry! They do get crowded now, but the wait is justified.

What’s your go-to coffee spot?

I don’t drink coffee, but I do drink tea. When someone wants to get coffee, we’ll go to Jubala. They do a nice green tea.

Boulted Bread

Where do you get a sweet treat?

I make a lot of cookies and stuff at home, so I don’t buy too many sweets. But I do like that Morning Bun at Boulted Bread

What’s your favorite new-ish place?

The Crawford Brothers Steakhouse. It’s pricey but worth it. They can take all my money!

What are you excited about in the hospitality scene?

I haven’t been to the St. Pierre Wine Shop in Iron Works yet, I’m excited to try it.
