Here in Raleigh, we have a good problem: With so many great spots to choose from, how do you decide where to go for something to eat or drink? We think the best way to ask someone is to get a recommendation from a person who knows their stuff.

For our 2026 Guide to Where to Eat and Drink in Raleigh, we tapped 10 local foodies and hospitality folks to share their favorite spots based on years of experience and excellent palates. Their selections include a broad range of tastes — from fine-dining experiences to quick-serve comfort food — that consistently deliver.

One of them was Chun Shi, executive chef  at Brewery Bhavana. Shi came to the United States from China to get an advanced degree and work in computer science. Her husband encouraged her to follow her dream and go to culinary school. At the age of 40, she went to Johnson & Wales in Charlotte. After graduation, she worked at An in Cary for nine years before becoming the dim sum chef at Brewery Bhavana when it opened in 2017. Shi became the executive chef in 2023.

Where do you go for a special-occasion meal?

It depends if my mom is with us. She lived with us for 16 years and just went back to China. So with her we go to Chinese restaurants. We like Chengu 7 or Szechuan Mansion Hotpot in Cary. When she’s not with us, we’ll go to Herons. I used to work with Steven Green at An so I know how talented he is.

What’s your go-to restaurant?

I like Ajja. I like chef Cheetie and that Mediterranean style food, it’s healthy and tastes good, and I like how their menu changes.

What’s your favorite spot that doesn’t get enough cred?

I love Oakwood Pizza Box, they’ve got the best pizza in town — the sauce and the bread are very good.

Where do you go to eat lunch?

I usually skip lunch because that’s my busy time at work. I don’t really eat three meals, but a later breakfast and early dinner.

Where do you get a meal on the go?

Mami Nora’s! We get the half chicken combo. It’s simple with good flavor.

Where do you like to get a beverage?

I don’t drink alcohol for religious reasons. I do drink tea but not coffee, it doesn’t react well with my body. I make tea at home.

42 & Lawrence

What’s your go-to coffee spot?

I don’t drink coffee, but my coworkers go to 42 & Lawrence around the corner. My neighbors are also excited because they’re opening a Left Hook Coffee near us.

Lucettegrace

Where do you get a sweet treat?

Lucettegrace. Their chef used to work at Herons, so I know him, and he left and opened his own shop. I’ll go there to pick up something for dessert or a birthday.

What’s your favorite new-ish place?

That would be Mala Pata! Of course now it’s hard to get a reservation.

What are you excited about in the hospitality scene?

I don’t drink coffee, but my neighbors are also excited because they’re opening a Left Hook Coffee near us.
