WALTER Magazine is looking for an associate editor to join our small, fast-moving team. This is primarily a digital role with a significant marketing and sponsored content component — the right candidate will be as comfortable writing a client newsletter as they are pitching a feature story idea.
The associate editor works across editorial and marketing under the direction of the editor, and plays a central role in how WALTER shows up online every day.
Editorial Responsibilities
- Write the monthly “Datebook” events section for the print magazine, which requires proactively sourcing events, reaching out to organizations and PR contacts, securing quotes and images, and identifying 1–2 related stories to develop and publish online each month.
- Write the monthly “Our Town” newsletter, a curated, seasonally minded guide to the city.
- Pitch and produce original digital-only stories on a regular basis, with a finger on the pulse of what’s happening in Raleigh before it’s been covered elsewhere.
- Build and schedule print content for the website and social media each month, coordinating the promotion of issue stories across platforms.
- Field story pitches and assist with research for the print magazine; occasionally write stories.
- Fact-check and assist with copy editing as needed during production.
- Attend press events, openings and cultural happenings regularly, both to generate content and to represent WALTER in the community.
- Other duties as requested by management.
Social Media Responsibilities
The associate editor owns WALTER’s social media presence day-to-day. This includes:
- Daily monitoring and engagement across Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn — sharing stories, responding to tags and keeping our accounts active and connected to the community.
- Monthly planning: building out a content calendar, coordinating with the creative director on photography needs for upcoming events, and scheduling posts in advance.
- Opportunistic, real-time posting around local events, seasonal moments and community events that are relevant to our audience.
- Identifying people, accounts and organizations to collaborate with and tag to extend our reach.
Marketing Responsibilities
A meaningful portion of this role involves writing and producing paid content for clients and promoting our events. This includes:
- Writing and deploying sponsored newsletters and paid web articles.
- Writing paid advertorial and special sections for print
- Writing event marketing emails — from initial announcements to ticket push and pre-event communications.
- Producing social media content for WALTER’s annual events and coordinating with event partners to cross-promote.
- On-site support at WALTER events, including setup, breakdown and sharing real-time content.
- Updating and maintaining ads on the website.
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate has 1–3 years of experience in journalism or a closely related field, with strong writing skills across formats — editorial, marketing and social. You have a genuine enthusiasm for Raleigh: its food, arts, community and culture. You understand WALTER’s voice and have the judgment to apply it across very different kinds of content, from a sponsored newsletter to an Instagram caption to a reported story.
You work quickly and accurately, you’re proactive about surfacing ideas and you don’t wait to be told what’s happening in the city. And because we’re a small team with a lot of ground to cover, you’re someone who pitches in wherever needed — no task is beneath you, and no standard is too high.
Interested? Please apply via the form below.
Thank you for your interest. We will begin reviewing resumes the week of June 15.
