WALTER Magazine Wins at 2024 North Carolina Press Association Awards

WALTER received first place for General Excellence in the new Magazine division, plus 10 other advertising and editorial awards.

At its annual convention at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel on Sept. 19, the North Carolina Press Association announced that WALTER magazine earned 11 editorial and advertising awards. One of the awards was for 1st Place in General Excellence in its new Magazines division, where North Carolina magazines compete against each other. Second place for General Excellence to Charlotte’s SouthPark, WALTER’s sister publication within The Pilot publishing group.

In addition to General Excellence, various columns, features and advertising campaigns at WALTER won awards:

  • WALTER’s staff received 2nd place for Community Coverage for its reportage on Raleigh arts and culture, specifically in its June and October 2023 issues. 
  • WALTER photographer Justin Kase Conder and writer Hampton Williams Hofer won 3rd place for Arts and Entertainment Reporting for their story “Raising the Barre” in the February 2023 issue, a piece about barrier-breaking ballerina Debra Austin. 
  • Contributing writer Paul Baker and photographer Samantha Everette won 2nd place for Arts and Entertainment Reporting for their story “When Painting is a Practice” in the August 2023 issue, which profiled artist Lamar Whidbee. 
  • Illustrator Rebekah Evans won 2nd place in the Illustration category for the “Young Laureates” feature in the May 2023 issue. 
  • Longtime sports reporter A.J. Carr won 2nd place in the Sports Column category for his coverage of local athletic stars.
  • Naturalist and photographer Mike Dunn won 1st place in the Lighter Columns category for his ongoing Nature column. 
  • Photographer Eamon Queeney won 1st place in the Feature Photography category for his images in story “Well Seasoned,” about local chef Preeti Wass’ Thanksgiving traditions, in the November 2023 issue. 
  • Photographer Justin Kase Conder won 2nd place in the Feature Photography category for his images in “Taking Flight,” a story about the living conservatory at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
  • Creative director Laura Wall and sales executive Cristina Hurley were awarded 1st place for their advertising campaign for Green Front Furniture advertising. 
  • Creative director Laura Wall was awarded 2nd place for WALTER’s in-house advertising series featuring Sir Walter Raleigh. 

“I am so proud of my staff and our amazing contributors, and would like to thank the NCPA for recognizing their hard work,” says WALTER editor Ayn-Monique Klahre. “It’s an honor and a privilege to share stories about Raleigh’s rich culture and community in our magazine.” 

Each of the magazines in The Pilot media group, WALTER’s parent company, received awards for their work. Business NC received six awards, given to Shannon Cuthrell, Chris Roush, David Mildenberg, Ed Martin and staff. Greensboro’s O.Henry magazine won nine awards, given to Brad Beard, Billy Ingram, Jim Dodson, Cassie Bustamante, Bert VanderVeen and Cynthia Adams. Southern Pines’ PineStraw magazine won 15 awards, given to Scott Yancey, Samantha Cunningham, Scott Yancey, Erika Leap, Kathy Desmond, Ginny Trigg, Todd Pusser, Mariano Santillan, Jim Moriarty, Jenna Biter, Matt Myers and staff. Charlotte’s SouthPark magazine won three awards, given to Richard Israel, Whitley Adkins, Sharon Smith and Alyssa Kennedy. 

“We’re happy to see our sister publications recognized for all the effort that goes into putting together their smart, beautiful magazines,” says Klahre. “We’re lucky to be part of a company that is dedicated to supporting North Carolina journalism.”
