In January, Pamela Brewington Cashwell was named t In January, Pamela Brewington Cashwell was named the new secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, which oversees all of our state’s arts, culture, history + natural areas. This includes more than 100 locations — among them historic sites, museums, parks & trails. She was previously secretary at the North Carolina Department of Administration & is a member of the Coharie & Lumbee tribes, making her the first Native American woman to head a cabinet department in our state. You probably know Phil Cook from his work with mus You probably know Phil Cook from his work with musicians like Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger, Megafaun + his own band. But his most recent album, Appalachia Borealis, is a solo collection of stripped down piano melodies. An unexpected influence? Birds. Cook was living alone on a farm in Orange County, where he grew accustomed to hearing their songs constantly. He took to recording them, and one day started listening to them in his headphones while at the piano. “Getting into that zone, I felt an immediate sense of calm with the sounds of the birds in the forest in my headphones,” he says. “Right away, I wrote 2 or 3 songs that are on this album.
