Here in Raleigh, we have a good problem: With so many great spots to choose from, how do you decide where to go for something to eat or drink? We think the best way to ask someone is to get a recommendation from a person who knows their stuff.
For our 2026 Guide to Where to Eat and Drink in Raleigh, we tapped 10 local foodies and hospitality folks to share their favorite spots based on years of experience and excellent palates. Their selections include a broad range of tastes — from fine-dining experiences to quick-serve comfort food — that consistently deliver.
One of them was Sarah Shepherd, the co-owner of Heights House Hotel. Shepherd has called Raleigh home for 15 years and opened Heights House Hotel in 2021. It operates as a boutique hotel, event space and bar. They also host afternoon tea and Sunday Sauce nights with rotating local chefs serving up fresh pasta dishes. They are planning to do more collaborations with local F&B businesses, so keep an eye out for more food offerings and events coming out of Heights House!
Where do you go for a special-occasion meal?
I always say Stanbury because it really does feel like home — the music, the atmosphere. They always have unique flavor profiles. The vibe is casual but the food is elevated, which is my vibe in a nutshell. I love the classics like the fried oysters, bone marrow, curds, ribeye — it never disappoints.
What’s your go-to restaurant?
I love Standard Beer + Food. It’s also an oldie but it’s great with the kids. They have great food, great cocktails — it never lets us down! We always get the smash burger, truffle friends and cobb salad.
What’s your favorite spot that doesn’t get enough cred?
There is this sushi spot in a gas station in Apex, Akami. It used to be a subway, but now they have this sushi that’s so fresh, they have great service — it’s small but really good. Another hidden gem is Heirloom. People think of it for coffee, but they don’t remember they have lunch and dinner, too. I love the chicken rice porridge and the crab claws.
Where do you go to eat lunch?
It’s hard to pick. I’m down to two with Omakase by Kai and Sushi Mon. I also love the box lunch at lucettegrace.
Where do you get a meal on the go?
I narrowed this down to two. I love Mustang House on Fayetteville Street. They have Indian and Nepalese food, I always get the Papdi Chat and the Momo dumplings. I also try to track down the Lao-Lao Food Truck. I get a platter so I can try a little bit of everything.
Where do you like to get a beverage?
Well, I’m partial but I love The Parlor at Heights House. I think we have the best cocktails! My go-to is Sarah’s Sazerac — it’s on the menu — or the dirty dill martini.
What’s your go-to coffee spot?
Lately it’s Iris Coffee Lab. I love their coffee but their matcha is amazing, too. They do a jasmine mini matcha with a salt cream top… it’s delicious.
Where do you get a sweet treat?
We love to take the kids to Holl & Stone Farm. They have New Zealand style soft serve, which I’d never had before, but it’s so good. They always have great food trucks and beer and wine.
What’s your favorite new-ish place?
I love Toyo Sake Shop & Tasting Bar in Cary, Jeff and I love sake. We also love St. Pierre Wine Shop & Bar. They’re two wonderful spots that have such a good variety within their niches.
What are you excited about in the hospitality scene?
I’m excited about 42nd Street Oyster Bar reopening, it’s one of the first places I ever went when I moved to Raleigh. I’m also excited about the Raleigh location for Pizzeria Toro!
