Birds & Blooms

YEJI DONG, of Cary, NC walks through a five-acre patch of sunflowers in Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, NC. For 2022, nearly 200,000 Clearfield Sunflower seeds were planted in mid-May. Typically in bloom for 2 weeks, the City of Raleigh will harvest the sunflowers to create thousands of gallons of biodiesel, which is then processed into fuel to run tractors, trailers and farm equipment. The field also serves as a massive pollinator habitat for bees and other insects.
