Joy Callaway
Wednesday, May 14 | Maywood Hall
Join WALTER at Maywood Hall as we host Joy Callaway, the international bestselling author of What The Mountains Remember, All The Pretty Places, The Grand Design, Secret Sisters and The Fifth Avenue Artists Society. She’ll be in conversation with her friend and fellow author Kristy Woodson Harvey to talk about her two newest books, Star of Camp Greene and Sing Me Home to Carolina.
Your ticket includes cocktail hour, dinner, unlimited wine, a book talk and signing opportunity with Callaway. Her books are also available for purchase with your ticket, and she’ll have previous books available for purchase at the event as well.

Here’s what we’ve been up to recently.
Celebrate the Season 2024
On Dec. 4, more than 200 people joined WALTER to shop from a curated list of local retailers at 1000 Social, a new event venue at The Exchange in North Hills. Guests enjoyed wine and snacks from Westgate Wine, Trophy Brewing and Catering Works, plus amazing tasty bites from WILDERS and dessert from The Kupkake Fairy. Green Front Furniture created a festive lounge where folks enjoyed Cheerwine-infused holiday cocktails.
Taste of the Wild 2024
On Oct. 9, we hosted Jamie Davis, the executive chef of The Hackney, and Sam Jones, pitmaster at Sam Jones BBQ for Taste of the Wild, a a lively dinner in celebration of North Carolina food traditions. Some of our sources for local ingredients included Wilders, Locals Seafood, Fullsteam Brewery, Liberty & Plenty Distillery and Westgate Wine.
Book Club with Valerie Bauerlein
When South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his son and wife, his trial drew international attention. Wall Street Journal reporter and Raleigh resident Valerie Bauerlein has written the definitive book on the tragic saga. On Sept. 18, more than 200 guests joined Bauerlein and WALTER founding editor Liza Roberts for an intimate conversation, book reading and signing — plus an energetic audience Q&A about the mystery that still remains.
WINnovation 2024
On Sept. 13, WALTER hosted its 10th WINnovation. More than 250 guests gathered at The Umstead Hotel & Spa for professional workshops, networking and headshots, and the dinner and speaker program. The 2024 speakers were Francie Gottsegen, president of the NC Courage; Yvette Holmes, CEO of Southeast Raleigh Promise; designer and visual artist Precious D. Lovell; Raleigh Chief of Police Estella Patterson; and Denise Young, director of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
Music of Remembrance
On May 5, WALTER and NCMA partnered to present a special afternoon of music for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Violinist Jacqueline Saed Wolborosky and pianist Mini Solomon performed on a violin and piano rescued from Nazi-era Germany in an event inspired by a WALTER article. Book Club with Kristy Woodson Harvey
In April, WALTER hosted New York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey at City Club Raleigh to learn about her latest book, A Happier Life. A North Carolina author, Harvey is known for her novels The Summer of Songbirds, Under the Southern Sky and the Peachtree Bluff series. The event included a cocktail hour, dinner, Q&A with Harvey and a book signing.
Taste of the Wild 2023
In October, WALTER honored the outdoors with a sustainable, farm-to-table dinner from James Beard award winning chef Ricky Moore and pit-master Matt Register as they collaborated on a unique menu and shared the importance of sourcing local ingredients. Great food and experiences for all!
Celebrate the Season 2023
In December 2023, WALTER’s popular shopping event returned at CAM Raleigh. Guests mingled and shopped from dozens of vendors while enjoying refreshments and jazz. Click here for photos and a recap.
WINnovation 2023
In September 2023, WALTER held its annual celebration of women, innovation and entrepreneurial ship at The Umstead Hotel & Spa. This year’s speakers were Debra Austin, Ballet Master at Carolina Ballet; Janet Cowell, President + CEO of Dix Park Conservancy; Kathryn Shah, Co-Founder and President of Spring & Mulberry; and Preeti Waas, Chef & Owner of Cheeni Indian Food Emporium.
At the Table with Susan Gravely
In April 2023, we gathered at Transfer Co. Food Hall with Vietri CEO Susan Gravely and her best friend Frances Mayes. Susan shared recipes from her new book, Italy on a Plate: Travels, Memories, Menus, with the help from chefs and pasta makers from Raleigh’s Alimentari at Left Bank. An Evening with Beverly McIver and Liza Roberts

WINnovation 2022
